  1. Embrace Your Unique Style: Carnival costumes come in all shapes and sizes. In Trinidad, some bands showcase masqueraders with incredibly fit bodies on their social media, which might seem intimidating for newcomers. Don't let it discourage you! Reach out to the band and inquire about options for plus-size individuals. You might be pleasantly surprised by their response.

  2. Research Curvy-Friendly Bands: Before diving into the festivities, it's essential to research which bands offer inclusive options for plus-size participants (I also have a list of curvy friendly bands to help makes things easier). Join WhatsApp or Facebook groups, where you can connect with experienced carnival-goers who can provide insights into bands that cater to your needs. ( my favorite is TheCaribbeanGroupie on instagram)

  3. Early Registration Matters: If this is your first time participating in Trinidad's carnival, understand that it's not your typical leisurely trip. When a band opens registration, make a swift decision if you've already set your sights on a particular band. Secure your spot in your favorite section as soon as possible. Delaying your decision could result in missing out on your preferred costume, as the best options tend to go quickly.

  4. Be Prepared for Costume Adjustments: Even veteran masqueraders can encounter costume mishaps. To be on the safe side, pack an extra bra and underwear, a sewing kit, and a glue gun. These items can be invaluable for making on-the-go adjustments. Carnival veterans should also consider bringing an old costume that matches the new one, just in case.

  5. Embrace Stockings and Chafing Cream: For those who love a polished look, stockings are your best friends. They not only enhance your costume but also help prevent chafing, especially if you have curvier thighs. I would strongly suggest Fetedolls for suitable options. Alternatively, if stockings aren't your preference, don't forget to carry chafing cream with you on the road for added comfort. And, of course, always have some emergency cash on hand or Vex money!
